“Camellia Sinensis” is the name of the bush or tea plant. Tea is made by leaves and leaf buds of this plant. In 2737 B.C tea was discovered accidentally when boiling the water in the garden, a leaf from a wild tea tree blew into the pot. At that time people consumed tea as herbal medicine or an antidote of poison.

The tea is produced in six main types -white, black, green, oolong, yellow and post-fermented. They all come from the same plant but the difference lies in how the leaves are treated after they are harvested. Each type of tea has its own aroma and visual appearance. The changes in chemical composition, taste, and aroma are created during the oxidation process.


“Herbal teas, however, are not made up of the same plant and are not tea. These are the product of roots, flowers, and leaves. Chamomile and peppermint are the most healthy and popular herbal drink in the world”. They are less commonly called Tisane.

Tea cuppa contains healthy chemicals like – polyphenols, flavonoids. These chemicals act as antioxidants that scavenge free radicals and reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases and certain cancers.

The small amount of caffeine in tea is associated with mental alertness and enhances relaxation. Black, yellow, and oolong tea all contain caffeine.
