Meal planning refers to the steps that are taken to make your meal nutritious and affordable to every member of your family. It involves the use of family resources both material and human to reach the family goals, where family resources refers to whatever the family has in terms of time, energy and money. It is dependent on age, sex, physical activity of the person, economic conditions, seasonal availability of food, time and energy, religious beliefs, likes and dislikes of the person and most important satiety value.

Importance of meal planning:

Meal planning is important for meeting the daily nutritional requirement of an individual in a family. It helps us to decide what we are going to eat in each meal daily. Meal planning makes the food economical by fulfilling the demands of every member of the family. It also saves the time and energy of the person making the meal by adopting the method of using the left over’s for the next meal avoiding the wastage. Thus, meal planning is a significant step in maintaining the nutritional and economical balance of the family.

Aspects of meal planning

There are three aspects of the meal planning, namely:

  1. Nutritional aspect
  2. Economical aspect
  3. Psychological aspect
1.) Nutritional aspect:

This aspect of the meal planning refers to the planning of meal which is one according to the daily requirement of the body which varies from sex, nutritional and health status. Physiologically, food furnishes the energy needed by the body to maintain its temperature and carry on its daily activities for growth, repair and maintenance of body tissues and to regulate body processes. This aspect involves the use of various food groups which provides different levels of energy and fulfils the RDA requirement.

2.) Economical aspect:

This aspect refers to the combination of low cost + healthy diet. Since the amount of money spent for food varies with income, it is necessary first to determine how much the family afford to spend on food and this aspect is the most important aspect.

If you want to purchase the healthy food items along with low cost follow the tips given below:

  • Prepare shopping list.
  • Use gift coupons or refund offers.
  • Buy in bulk if you have enough storage space but buy perishable in small quantity.
  • Avoid foods in fancy packages.
  • Don’t go for the brands to try low priced brands.
  • Read the Labels carefully.
  • Avoid Ready to serve food items.
  • Do not shop when hungry.
  • Shop without the pressure of children.
  • People with low-income group can buy broken eggs, meat at the evening time at low cost.
3.) Psychological aspect:

This aspect refers to the mindset of the individual while having a meal. It depends on various factors like colour, temperature, flavour, texture, shape rich foods. For example, if colour or shape or texture of the food item is liked by the individual then the particular food item will be preferred more. This fulfils the satiety and psychological demand of the person also.

You all must be aware that the normal diet satisfies the nutritional needs of a healthy individual.
Yet, if a person falls sick there is a malfunctioning of the parts of the body, meal planning can help you a lot in preventing such scenarios. Also if you are from a low-income group family you can apply these economical tips.
