Gummy Bears: How Are They Made And What’s New

‘Gummy bears’, the word is enough to make our mouths water. Gummy bears are those sticky candies with chewy exteriors which are colourful and comes in varied shapes and flavours. They are not only popular among kids but are a delight to many youngsters too. Have you ever thought that how these are produced and what are the key ingredients or if they are good for health or not?

PROCESSING & INGREDIENTS

The most basic ingredients used in the production of gummy candies are corn syrup, sugar, water, gelatin, flavourings (which includes citric acids and artificial fruit extracts), food colourings. These ingredients can be altered based on vegetarian and organic gummy candies production.

Corn syrup is added to provide gummy bear with a gummy texture without adding a lot of water. This results in a candy that can be left out at room temperature without any fear of shrinkage.

Gelatin is used to provide a characteristic gummy and chewy flavour. Generally, bovine(obtained from beef), porcine(obtained from pork), piscine(obtained from fishes). Gelatin is used by Haribo (the company who invented gummy bears), but using this becomes an issue for vegetarians so, some gummy bears which are made of pectin or starch(produces shorter, cleaner and less chewy candies) are manufactured making them a valid choice for vegetarians.

Flavourings and colourings are added to provide different flavours thus, fulfilling everyone’s choice. Sour gummy bears are larger and flatter than regular ones, have a softer texture, and include fumaric acid or other acid ingredients to produce a sour flavour. Some of the most popular flavours of gummy bears include raspberry, orange, strawberry, pineapple, and lemon.

For the production part, all the above ingredients are mixed in large vats. Once a smooth slurry is produced, it is then poured into different shaped moulds lined with corn starch and allowed to sit for 24 hrs at 65 degrees Fahrenheit to set. After 24hrs these are emptied in large tumblers to absorb corn syrup and then the candies are sent for packaging.

Though these gummies are tasty and sweet, they are devoid of calories so, these are proven good to eat after a workout, According to a research done by the Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition, eating fast-digesting carbs as gummy bears will quickly replenish the glycogen you used during your workout!

The new and healthier option of gummy bears

Today, nutrient-rich gummy bears are made called “Hemp gummy bears”, these are infused with Vitamin E and C, omega 3,6,9 fatty acids. These not only energizes any individual but also releases pain, headache, nausea and inflammations. Hemp oil which is the unique ingredient, helps the brain to focus and provides better memory.

The other one is the CBD gummies, which contains therapeutic compound CBD(cannabidiol), which comes from the Marijuana plant. CBD helps in reducing pain, anxiety, depression.

The only difference between hemp and CBD gummies is the THC content. Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) is the psychoactive compound of cannabis. Hemp gummies contain THC that is federally regulated and is not more than 0.2% THC.

Thus, gummy bears are not only delightful but even a healthier option to fight against many conditions.
